Coal Jobs in Appalachia to suffer as thick coal seams run out.

This means more jobs for Wyoming’s Powder River Basin and fewer for union jobs in WV, KY. Tens of thousands of miners will need jobs. Solar installations to the rescue?

More on Solar/Jobs/Economy

There are now 100,237 jobs in the American solar industry, according to preliminary figures released this morning by the Solar Foundation. The organization is currently putting together its second solar jobs census, which will be released next month. The census tracks a diverse range of jobs in solar photovoltaics (PV), solar thermal, and concentrating solar power.

The Solar Foundation found that between August of 2010 and August of 2011, the solar industry grew by 6.8 percent, far outpacing the 0.7 percent growth rate of the overall U.S. economy.

According to figures compiled by the solar census researchers from an Economic Modeling Specialists database, jobs in the fossil-fuel electricity generation sector actually dropped by more than 1,600 over the last year. Meanwhile, the solar industry added more than 6,700 jobs.

Solar is fastest growing industry in America

Rhone Reisch of SEIA, the Solar Energy Industry Assoc, said at the Congresswoman Gabby Giffords’ Solar Summit [yes, the Congresswoman who got shot is a big solar advocate, coming from Tuscon] that there are now 100,000 people working in the solar industry. While there were 64 companies in the SEIA just 7 years ago, there are now 6000 American companies in the solar industry. Phenomenal growth. And why? Incentives from the feds and states and the incentives are working as hoped, that is, more people will get working on these products, volume increases and prices come down. Now solar panels are selling for under $2/watt and getting closer to $1/watt. There are 17,000 MW to 24,000 MW of commercial scale solar projects in the works right now. That is the equivalent of 17 – 24 1,000 MW nuclear plants, at peak. Now, solar is producing energy all the time, but guess what, neither is nuclear producing all the time, due to earthquakes, safety checks, etc. More of that all the time, so nuclear is looking riskier. Nuclear is usually on more than solar, but compare the costs per delivered kilowatt hour. Solar is now cheaper than either nuclear or natural
